Garage Door Parts Explained
What each part does, the way it gives out, and which ones you should never touch.
A residential garage door has about ten parts that fail. Springs, cables and drums carry the weight and are all under tension. Rollers, hinges and seals wear gradually and are cheap. Sensors and remotes are electrical and usually the easiest fix of all.
Where Everything Sits
The quickest way to understand a garage door is to stop thinking about the motor. The springs do the lifting, the cables and drums pass that lift to the door, the rollers keep it on line, and the opener supplies the last few pounds. Work out which of those has stopped doing its job and you have found the fault.
Two things about this city change which parts fail and how fast. Forty percent of the homes here were built between 1970 and 1979, so a great many of these components are original and are failing in a readable sequence: bearings dry out and squeal, drums wear a shoulder that lets the cable ride up, hinge holes elongate until a section sits crooked. And the temperature swings roughly 130 degrees across the year, with 20.2 days above 100°F and 29.2 nights at or below freezing, which thins grease in August and drags it in January.

That is precisely where people get hurt, and it is why the Consumer Product Safety Commission has written about this hardware for decades.
